Preparing for the New Golf Season

As we begin to move out of the winter months and look forward to longer days and better playing conditions, many golfers are starting to dust off their clubs and think about the season ahead. After a winter of limited golf and the occasional range session in colder conditions, it’s perfectly normal for the game to feel a little rusty. The start of spring is therefore the ideal moment to reset, refocus and prepare both your swing and your equipment for the months ahead.
Start with Your Equipment
One area that is often overlooked by club golfers is ensuring their equipment is properly set up. Over time clubs naturally wear, grips lose their tackiness and loft and lie angles can shift slightly through regular use. These small changes might not seem significant, but they can have a noticeable impact on ball striking and accuracy.
Replacing worn grips is one of the easiest ways to improve control. If your grips feel smooth or slippery, it’s probably time for a refresh. Clean grooves are equally important. A quick clean with warm water and a brush can dramatically improve spin and consistency.
Many golfers also benefit from a professional club check or fitting before the season begins. Even slight adjustments can make a real difference, especially if your swing has evolved over time.

Shake Off the Winter Rust
Start with a few relaxed range sessions to re-establish your rhythm. Focus on tempo and solid contact rather than distance. Short-game practice is also invaluable; putting and chipping often disappear over winter but can return quickly with a little attention.
A sensible practice routine might include:
Begin with half swings using a wedge
Gradually work through the bag
Finish with a few drivers to regain timing
This steady progression helps restore consistency without overloading your swing too quickly.
Don’t Forget Your Body
Just as your clubs need attention, so does your body. Golf may look gentle, but the swing places significant demands on the back, shoulders and hips. After a quieter winter, easing your body back into regular movement is important.
Make sure you warm-up with gentle torso rotations, shoulder rolls and light stretching to loosen muscles and reduce the risk of injury. Walking for a few minutes before hitting balls is also a good way to get the body moving.
If you’ve struggled with stiffness or niggles in previous seasons, a session with a physiotherapist or a golf fitness specialist can also be worthwhile. They can identify areas of tightness or weakness and suggest exercises to improve mobility and stability throughout the swing.

Refresh Your Golf Wardrobe
Spring is also a good time to review your golfing wardrobe. Comfortable, breathable clothing can make a surprising difference to performance and enjoyment on the course.
Check your essential kit is ready for the season ahead from waterproof layers and mid-layers for early spring rounds to lighter polos and knitwear as temperatures improve. Proper footwear is equally important; ensure spikes or soles are in good condition and still provide the grip you need on damp turf.
A fresh glove, a reorganised golf bag and a quick check that you have all the small essentials like tees, ball markers and pitch repairers..
Build Some Early Momentum
The temptation at the start of the season is to chase big scores immediately, but patience usually pays off. Think of the first few rounds as an opportunity to rebuild confidence and rediscover your feel around the greens.
But most importantly, the start of the golf season is about enjoying being back on the course.
The longer evenings, greener fairways and the first truly warm rounds of the year remind us why the game is so special.
