From Overwhelmed to Organised -Tackling Clutter

We're living in an age of constant consumption—where fast fashion, one-click shopping and impulse buys have made it easier than ever to accumulate stuff, often without even noticing. Before we know it, our homes are overflowing, and we're left feeling overwhelmed by clutter we don’t quite know how to handle or where do start?

Meet Victoria from Surrey Decluttering who has used her love for problem-solving with her passion for creating order to help people sort out there homes.

What motivated you to start Surrey Decluttering?

My motivation stems from a desire to make a real difference in people's lives by helping them create more functional and calm living spaces. After a long career in R&D, I was drawn to professional home organising as it allowed me to combine my love for problem-solving with my passion for creating order. Many clients refer to me as a personal trainer for the home, as I tackle the overwhelm and procrastination often associated with the build-up of clutter, keep my clients on track and see them through the process to their organisational goals.

Why do our homes get so cluttered?

Clutter can build up due to several reasons. A lot of it comes from not having time to organise or declutter, as often the case for busy families. Over time, things accumulate—often without us even realising it—and before long, what was once a tidy space can become cluttered and lead us to feeling overwhelmed. Emotional attachment to items, such as clothes, gifts, or old papers, can also contribute. People often hang onto things because they feel guilty or unsure about what to do with unwanted items. That’s where I come in, helping them make thoughtful decisions about what to keep and what to let go of.

What services do you offer and who would it benefit the most?

I offer decluttering and (re-)organising services for any areas of the home, whether that’s wardrobes in bedrooms, kitchens, or garages and lofts. I clean any cupboards or drawers as I go, giving each area a spring clean, all whilst restoring homely order.  I also offer basic DIY support, such as furniture assembling and putting up pictures. My services are perfect for busy parents, professionals, the elderly or those physically less able to do decluttering by themselves.

What is the best advice you could offer someone?

My best advice is to take it one step at a time. Start with one room or even just one section of a room. Set realistic goals and be kind to yourself during the process. If you come across items, you’re unsure about, don’t force a decision right away – put it in a ‘maybe’ pile and carry on with the process. Think about how each item adds value to your life and whether it’s really needed. Finally, remember that it’s okay to ask for help if you’re struggling!

Are you able to assist with disposing of what people don’t want to keep?

Absolutely! Part of my service includes helping clients with the disposal of items they no longer want. Whether it’s donating, recycling, or arranging for disposal, I ensure that everything is dealt with in an environmentally responsible way. It’s all part of helping people clear out their spaces without feeling guilty about the items they’re letting go of.
