Set within the Wentworth Estate, Connaught House is a newly built Georgian-inspired residence which spans 18,000 sq ft and is currently on the market for £25 million. Its scale is undeniable, yet what truly defines the property is not simply its architecture; it is how the interiors have been dressed to reflect the way its future owners might live.

Alexander James Interiors were appointed to stage the house in December, drawing on more than 30 years’ experience preparing some of the UK’s most exceptional private homes. At this level, styling is never about short-term trends or seasonal decoration. It is about establishing a sense of permanence, proportion and quiet confidence that will carry the home beautifully through every time of year.

We spoke with Managing Director Julian Walker about how thoughtful dressing transforms a substantial property into something far more personal.

Designing Around the Way You Live

When working at this calibre, the starting point is never furniture. It is lifestyle.

Who will live here?

How will they entertain?

Where will mornings begin and evenings wind down?

“In a house of this scale, it’s essential that it doesn’t feel overwhelming,” Julian explains. “We think carefully about how the future owners might move through the space day to day. Where would they sit with a coffee? Where would friends gather? Where does the family naturally come together?”

Those questions shape everything.

In the reception room, seating is arranged to foster conversation rather than simply fill space. A grand piano anchors the room not just visually, but emotionally, suggesting evenings of music and guests gathered nearby. Sofas are scaled generously to provide comfort without disrupting proportion. Rugs ground each arrangement, subtly softening the architectural formality.

Throughout the house, lighting is layered to create intimacy within volume. Even in rooms with soaring ceilings, the atmosphere feels calm and welcoming rather than imposing.

Making Scale Feel Personal

Large homes can easily feel impressive but impersonal. The challenge lies in balancing architectural strength with warmth. In this Wentworth residence, tailored upholstery introduces softness against classical lines. Carefully scaled rugs and curated artwork add narrative and depth. Pieces from Eichholtz bring structure, while art selected in collaboration with specialist galleries introduces individuality without overwhelming the architecture.

The result is a home that feels prepared for life rather than presentation.

Although dressed in winter, the design was intentionally timeless. Neutral foundations, layered textures and thoughtful placement mean the home transitions effortlessly as natural light shifts throughout the year. As days grow longer and doors begin to open onto terraces and gardens, the same spaces feel lighter, not because they were styled for a specific season, but because they were styled with longevity in mind.

Spaces for Entertaining and Everyday Living

Homes within Wentworth often balance privacy with hospitality. They must work equally well for quiet family evenings and larger social occasions.

The kitchen, designed by Extreme Design Furniture and appointed with Gaggenau appliances, is styled as a true hub. Open sightlines connect it seamlessly to adjacent living areas, reinforcing a sense of togetherness. It feels active and welcoming, not overly formal.

Reception rooms are layered and conversational rather than showroom perfect. Accessories are edited with restraint. Surfaces feel considered but never crowded. The aim is to suggest a life already unfolding within space.

For homeowners looking to bring a similar sense of refinement into their own properties, the advice is simple:

• Consider how you genuinely use each room before adjusting its layout

• Anchor larger spaces with well-proportioned seating and rugs

• Layer lighting to create warmth at different times of day

• Edit decorative pieces so that each item has space to breathe

Often, it is this is what elevates a home.

From House to Home

Spending time in this residence makes one thing clear: true luxury is not defined by scale alone. It is defined by how space makes you feel when you walk through the door.

Dressing home at this level is not about a moment in time. It is about shaping an environment that feels effortless, cohesive and ready whatever the season
